The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most iconic treks in the world, drawing thousands of trekkers each year to the foot of the world's highest peak. This guide covers everything from permits and packing to acclimatization and the best time to go.
Best Time to Go
The pre-monsoon (March-May) and post-monsoon (September-November) seasons offer the clearest skies and most stable weather for trekking in the Khumbu region.
Permits You'll Need
You'll need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit, both easily arranged in Kathmandu or Lukla.
Acclimatization
Altitude sickness is the biggest risk on this trek. Build in at least two acclimatization days — typically in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche — and always trek at a pace that allows your body to adjust.
